Giant Crocheted Snowflakes For The Holidays

I made giant crocheted snowflakes! Martha Stewart asked me to remake her lovely miniature snowflakes from a number of years ago. Of course, I fell in love with them immediately.

I wanted to make the directions easier to follow with detailed step by step photos and larger versions using a thicker yarn and larger hook. It’s always easier to learn tiny crochet patterns big first! In the end, who wouldn’t want to create these gorgeous, giant crocheted snowflakes for the holidays?

Due to the larger tools and materials, starting big can really help a crocheter see how a pattern comes together. You will see these snowflakes are easier than they look. Once you have the big ones down, you can shrink back down to that tiny steel hook and crochet thread to make some ornaments.

Use these giant crocheted snowflakes beauties to decorate packages, to create a runner down a festive table, or to hang for decoration.

Giant Crocheted Snowflakes

Originally based on the miniature snowflakes designs at Martha Stewart, she is sharing each of the individual snowflakes with my step by step directions over on her blog. I’ve linked to each individual snowflake design below. PLEASE NOTE there are some mistakes in her transcriptions of the patterns, I have listed and corrected the errata below. Please pay close attention to these changes.

Additionally, the materials she lists on the website are for her original tiny snowflakes. Below, I’ve listed materials for the giant ones, and provided directions how to stiffen the big ones for hanging.

Materials for the Giant Snowflakes

In the tutorials on Martha Stewart, only the materials for tiny snowflakes are provided. So if you want to make the big ones, you’re going to need the following:

I found couple of small corrections in how this pattern got transcribed to the website as well. Please note:

To Finish

Fresh off the hook the giant crocheted snowflakes will look a little curled and misshapen compared to how they’ll look after you block or stiffen them.

To shape soft snowflakes:

First, soak them in room temperature water for 20 minutes. Then, dry them by rolling them up in a towel and pin them flat to a blocking board. Finally, let them dry overnight. In the morning, you’ll see them in their full glory. They will be beautifully shaped, though floppy because there’s nothing to hold them stiff. This state is perfect for topping gifts.

To shape stiff snowflakes:

If you plan on hanging them, first, soak each snowflake in fabric stiffener for 1 minute.

Next, Using gloves, remove; pat dry with paper towels, and pin tautly to a blocking board protected by cling wrap or packing tape.

In either case, let them dry overnight. As a result, you’ll have beautifully stiff, ready to hang, snowflakes.
